Spring is here and it’s time to clear out and simplify our lives. In this month’s Tech Talk we’re trying to make your life easier with some cool apps that will help you de-clutter, shape up, and get organized. Let’s do this!
Today we are living in the future. What seemed like science fiction and myth 20 years ago is actually here. We have smart phones, smart cars, and even smart houses! Okay, so we’re still waiting on warp speed and that hover board but civilians are actually taking trips to the moon just for fun (thank you SpaceX!).
In the midst of a technology-driven civilization, it’s hard to think that anyone could be left behind. Unless you are one of the 12.6% (in 2015) of North Americans living with a disability it probably doesn’t cross your mind that often. Society’s underdogs are a small but mighty population with an entirely different set of needs when it comes to technology.
February is American Heart Month! If you’re an athlete, you’re probably pretty familiar with the importance of knowing your heart rate before, during, and after you exercise. But did you know that your heart rate can tell you if you have a developing health issue? So knowing how to accurately check our heart rate is something we should all be able to do. Luckily, there are several cool smartphone apps that help you do just that.
Happy New Year! Ready to grab 2017 by the horns? If you’ve made a few resolutions for the new year, you’ll be thrilled to know that there are tons of apps out there that can help you on your way to success. For this Tech Talk Thursday, we’ve rounded up apps that will support some common resolutions that people set.
Today is HSL Info Expo day! By popular demand, we’ll be showcasing some cool “Apps & Gadgets.” This winter’s Info Expo theme is “New Year, New You” and we’ll be focusing on exercise, fitness, and nutrition apps and gadgets to help you meet your goals for a better you in 2017. We could go and on and on about this subject because there are SO many cool gizmos out there, especially when it comes to health and fitness, but since we’re limited to just fifteen minutes, we thought we would bring you some of the apps and gadgets that didn’t make the cut (but are still pretty awesome, and you should totally check them out!).
November is here, and that means that Thanksgiving is only three weekends away. Which means that Christmas and Hanukkah and the other winter-time holidays are only about seven weeks away. Crazy, right?! To be honest, I started listening to Christmas music two days ago.
If you’re anything like us, you may be hoping to get some of your holiday shopping done on or around Black Friday – after all, it pays (well, saves) to be a savvy shopper, especially when it comes to newer technology releases. At this stage, precise Black Friday 2016 deals have yet to be confirmed; however, that doesn’t mean we don’t have a good idea of the sort of tech-y goodies you’ll be able to snap up on the cheap, so we’ve rounded up a list of the top technology products to look out for this holiday season. Be sure to make any tech-savvy family member or friend happy by keeping an eye out for these products, which are shaping up to be the most popular steals of the shopping season!
Apple products hold a special place in our heart, but we would be remiss if we didn’t take some time to cover neat tech announcements from other successful companies as well. If you missed it yesterday, Google held an event officially unveiling their jump into the smartphone market, the Pixel and Pixel XL. The event also highlighted other hardware and software coming soon. We’ve got a recap for you right here!
‘Tis the season of technology events and pumpkin spice! So while you’re preparing your holiday gift list or enhancing your career as a tech expert, do your homework first for all your tech savvy needs. Check out one or many of these upcoming events!
Held in Las Vegas August 28 – September 1, 2016, virtual mogul VMWare’s annual convention will offer hands-on training labs and certification exam centers. Can’t go to the one in the US? They’re also holding a WMworld 2016 in Europe on October 17 – 20!
The annual convention for cloud-based identity management service Okta will be held August 29-31, 2016 in Las Vegas. At first glance, I honestly had no idea how an identity management service works or how it might benefit me, but the name was too cool to pass up. Upon closer inspection, I saw that they have some awesome guest keynote speakers such as B.J. Novak, Malcom Gladwell, and Adam Savage lined up, which is enough to have completely peaked my interest!
The Internationale Funkaussetellung Berlin (International Radio Exhibition Berlin, or “Berlin Radio Show”) will be held September 2-7, 2016 in Berlin. The IFA is one of the longest standing industrial exhibitions in Germany and has become one of the leading trade shows for electronics and home appliances in the world. Bookending the IFA event is also a Samsung press event on September 1 and a LG Press event September 6.
Coming September 7, 2016 at 10am PDT is one of the most anticipated annual releases here in the U.S. While there’s a lot of speculation as to what new and innovative products Apple will release this year, it seems certain that a 7th iPhone will be unveiled!
Also on September 7, Sony is rumored to announce an improved PlayStation 4. Perhaps the perfect gift purchase for Black Friday?
Silicon Valley’s leading influence on technology startups and innovative ideas, TechCrunch Disrupt SF, will be held in San Francisco on September 12-14, 2016. With segments titled “Hackathon,” “Crunch Match,” and “Startup Battlefield,” any investor, hacker, entrepreneur, or tech fan will have something to see at this highly anticipated event.
Held in Atlanta on September 26-30, 2016 and already sold out, this year’s Microsoft event is geared towards enterprise technology. Combined with the Microsoft Data Science Summit, Ignite offers training, certification and sharing of ideas for big data engineers, IT pros, and machine learning practitioners.
Where to begin? I’m not a huge Dell fan, but perusing the DellWorld’16 site has sold me on attending this event. The event will be held October 18-20, 2016 in Austin (yeah, did I mention it’s in Austin, TX?). Not sure you can swing the time off? The event’s website offers a “The Top 3 things to tell your boss” printable page to support your case to your superior on why you should attend this event. DellWorld’16 will offer hands-on labs, demonstrations, and breakout sessions for IT and business professionals.
So, whether you’re an IT professional interested in enterprise technology or simply appreciate and enjoy consumer electronics this technology conference season holds something for you. For these and MANY more technology events visit: https://www.techmeme.com/events
It’s that time of year again–the dreaded Back to School! If you’re like me, when August rolls around and the store shelves are lined with backpacks, highlighters, composition notebooks, and other school supplies, you start having that familiar queasy feeling in the pit of your stomach. For many of us August means our kids are (finally!) getting out of the house after a long summer and heading to school, while for others it’s a time to start fresh with a new school year. For some, myself included, it’s a bit of both. Wherever you find yourself this August, we have some apps that will help you transition smoothly into the back to school grind.
It’s that time again, Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference 2016 (WWDC2016) kicked off its June preview with the demo of the highly anticipated new operating system for mobile devices, iOS 10! Some tech blogs are referring to this as the “Biggest iOS Release Ever”. No pressure, Apple! Along with iOS 10, Apple will also be releasing a new macOS, Sierra, as well as new softwares in tvOS and watchOS. The public beta version of iOS 10 will become available sometime in July and can be found here, if you’re interested: https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/
