Healthy Frozen Treats to Beat the Heat this Summer

Summer is in full swing, and that means the weather is hot, hot, hot! If you’re going to be outdoors for any length of time, it’s important to stay hydrated to replace fluids lost from sweating. An easy way to do this is obviously water. But there are tastier ways to beat dehydration and keep your cool.

Instead of turning to sugary ice cream and popsicles to keep you hydrated this summer, try these easy ideas for healthy frozen options that are fruit and veggie-based. Of course, ice cream and popsicles make delicious occasional treats, and can help cool you down, so go ahead and enjoy in moderation.

Fruits and vegetables make excellent hydration sources because they are naturally high in water, and also contain nutrients and electrolytes, including potassium, sodium, magnesium, and others, which can affect the amount of water in your body. Try some of these super easy recipes.

Chocolate-dipped bananas

Peel and cut a few not-too-ripe bananas in half. Insert a popsicle stick into each half. Melt a bag of semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds. Stir and heat again for another 30 seconds. Continue like this until all of the chocolate chips are melted. Dip each banana half into the chocolate and swirl to coat. Lay the coated bananas on a cookie sheet lined with parchment (a waxy paper plate works, too) and freeze for a few hours or overnight. Yum!

Watermelon wedges

It doesn’t get any easier than this! Slice up some watermelon into wedges and go to town. Watermelon is mostly water and is great for staying hydrated in the heat of summer.

 

Fruit juice pops

Instead of sugary store-bought popsicles, try making your own by blending up your favorite fruits and freezing them in popsicle molds. Try some fun and unique combinations like kiwi-melon, or mango-pineapple-banana. You can also add some yogurt for a creamy treat. Don’t have a popsicle mold? Paper cups and popsicle sticks work just as well!

Frozen grapes

Something about freezing grapes takes this everyday fruit from ho-hum to yum. And everything tastes better when ice-cold in the summer, right? Wash and dry some grapes (any color works), and lay them out on a paper plate and put them in the freezer for a few hours or overnight.

Banana “ice cream”

This healthy frozen concoction has been taking the internet by storm. Did you know you can make ice cream out of just frozen bananas? This is a great treat for people with a sensitivity or allergy to dairy products. Freeze some peeled bananas, then pop them into a food processor and watch the magic happen. After a few pulses, the bananas amazingly take on the consistency of soft-serve ice cream! No dairy and no sweeteners necessary. Try adding some peanut butter into the mix for a delicious variation, or top with a few mini-chocolate chips to feel like you’ve had an indulgent treat.
