No one could ever deny that we love what we do for our students each and every day – our fun posts across our various social media platforms make that pretty obvious. While most of our efforts are directed at preparing our students for life after medical school, we want our staff at the College of Medicine to know that we’re here for them as well! Here’s a short list of offerings from the Health Sciences Library that we hope our staff keep in mind and take advantage of.
Useful equipment for checkout
The library has more than just books available to borrow. Should you forget a phone or laptop charger at home, swing by the library and borrow one of ours for the day! Besides chargers, we also have laptops, iPads, mice, Ethernet cables, and much more available to borrow. Did we mention we also have lounge chairs available for use inside and outside of the building? All you need is your UCF ID card.
Our HSL Info Expo event has certainly come a long way since it’s debut in the fall of 2010. Info Expo is our way to reach out to our faculty and staff to keep you up to date with the latest technology news, as well to keep you in the loop with new things going on inside the library, all in a fun lunch & learn-type format. Originally held in the fall and spring, Info Expo now runs on a summer and winter schedule. You can look forward to our next Info Expo coming up in just a few months!
BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) Lunch & Learns
If you’ve been at the COM since we moved to Lake Nona, you’ll remember that the library used to host lunch and learns every once in a while, often focused on becoming more familiar with the iPads that we had just begun checking out. This spring we revamped and rebranded these sessions to bring your more information you can truly use from a variety of different topic areas. To date, we’ve gone over topics like social media basics, how to become a Google super user, and technology troubleshooting tips. Our next session is next Thursday from 12pm – 1pm; look out for the email invite!
UCF COM Book Club
This summer we kicked off an idea that in hindsight seems rather obvious for a library to have – an official book club for the College of Medicine! Meetings take place 3 times a year, in April, July, and November, and are organized in a lunch & learn format (we usually provide a sweet treat, too!). The book club is a great opportunity to spend some time outside of your department and mingle with colleagues from around the College in an informal discussion on the current book selection. So far we’ve read and discussed Mary Roach’s Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. We’ll be meeting soon to discuss our current book, a murder mystery titled The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley!
Popcorn Day is still one of our most popular weekly events, held every Thursday afternoon starting at 3pm. We encourage you to get to the library as soon as you can, if not super early – the medical students are really serious about their Thursday afternoon snack! Having trouble remembering to take that break to walk down to the library? Considered setting yourself a weekly reminder in your calendar!
Stay tuned for more fun!
Aside from the standard events we hold regularly, we’re always coming up with additional ways to connect with our users. Keep an eye on our social media accounts and your email inboxes for notifications about other events like traveling exhibit receptions, art exhibitions, and more!
As always, if you have any questions about the services the library can provide you with, feel free to contact us via email, or stop by the library to talk with any of our staff!
